Qayem Chandpuri
Qayem Chandpuri was a prominent 18th-century Urdu poet and a distinguished representative of the early classical ghazal tradition in North India. Born in 1722 in Chandpur, near Bijnor in present-day Uttar Pradesh, he was a contemporary of poets such as Meerr Taqi Meer and Khwaja Mir Dard. His poetry is characterised by clarity of expression, restraint in emotion, and a fine balance between conventional imagery and personal reflection. Qayem wrote in the early idiom of Rekhta, contributing to the development of Urdu as a literary language during a period of transition and linguistic consolidation. Though not as widely known today as his more celebrated contemporaries, Qayem Chandpuri enjoyed considerable respect in his time and was frequently included in tazkirahs (biographical anthologies of poets). His ghazals display an elegant simplicity, drawing on themes of love, transience, and spiritual longing, often articulated through a deeply personal and introspective voice. This selection of one hundred ghazals offers readers a window into the sensibility of a refined and thoughtful poet who helped shape the idiom of the Urdu ghazal in its formative period.
