Qalandar Bakhsh Jur’at
Qalandar Bakhsh Jur’at was one of the notable Urdu poets of the late 18th century, associated with the flourishing literary culture of Lucknow. Born in 1748, possibly in Delhi, Jur’at eventually made Lucknow his home, where he found patronage and acclaim in the court of Nawab Asif-ud-Daula. He is often remembered as a poet of sensuous charm, elegance, and emotional intensity. Jur’at’s ghazals are characterised by a romantic aesthetic marked by delicacy of expression, musicality of language, and a certain refined hedonism that reflects the cultural milieu of late Mughal and early Nawabi Lucknow. He is known for his graceful style, suggestive yet controlled imagery, and deep engagement with the beloved as both an ideal and an enigma. Jur’at was also admired for the fluency and naturalness of his verse, which made his poetry accessible without sacrificing literary merit. Although not as philosophically dense as Meer or rhetorically grand as Sauda, Jur’at carved a distinct niche with his sensuous lyricism and fluent diction. This selection of one hundred ghazals invites readers into a world of refined love poetry, where aesthetic pleasure and emotional nuance harmonise in finely wrought verse.
