Meer Soz
Meer Soz, born Muhammad Asghar in Delhi around 1720, was a major figure of the 18th-century Urdu literary world and one of the most refined voices of the Lucknow school of poetry. A contemporary of Meer Taqi Meer and a predecessor to the great Lucknow poets, Soz was known for the lyrical grace, emotional depth, and cultured refinement of his ghazals. He later moved to Lucknow, where he found generous patronage under Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, and became an influential court poet. Meer Soz’s poetry reflects the transition of Urdu literature from the somber and mystical tones of Delhi to the more decorative and stylised idiom of Lucknow. His ghazals are distinguished by their elegance of diction, richness of metaphor, and a subtle play of emotion, often exploring themes of love, loss, beauty, and the caprices of fate. With a strong grounding in Persian literary tradition and a command of Urdu’s expressive potential, Soz carved a unique niche for himself in the classical canon. This curated selection of one hundred ghazals presents the reader with a representative view of his delicate artistry and poetic vision.
