Inamullah Khan Yaqeen

Yaqeen, born in Delhi in 1745, was a gifted but tragically short-lived Urdu poet whose ghazals reflect a rare combination of youthful sensitivity, lyrical elegance, and classical restraint. A disciple of the great Meer Taqi Meer, Yaqeen belonged to the golden generation of early Urdu poets in Delhi who helped shape the emotional and linguistic contours of the classical ghazal. Though his life was cut short at the age of just 22, his poetry left an indelible impression on the tradition.

Yaqeen’s ghazals are marked by a subtle emotional depth, unforced fluency, and a quiet melancholy that resonates with themes of love, separation, and spiritual longing. Unlike the rhetorical flourish of some of his contemporaries, Yaqeen’s verse is notable for its sincerity, delicacy of tone, and graceful imagery. Despite his limited output, his work was recognised by later generations for its exemplary diction and thematic purity. This collection of one hundred ghazals offers a rare glimpse into a youthful voice matured by inner reflection and guided by the classical ideal of sukhan. Yaqeen remains an enduring symbol of poetic potential that bloomed briefly but brightly in the formative years of Urdu poetry.
