Introduction to Mir Amman’s Bagh-o-Bahar. This book is in Urdu
Bagh-o-Bahar (“The Garden and the Spring”) is a classic of early Urdu literature and one of the first masterpieces of modern Urdu prose. Written by Mir Amman of Delhi in the early 19th century at Fort William College, this adaptation of the Persian Qissa-e-Chahar Darvesh transformed a traditional tale into living, idiomatic Urdu and helped define the literary language for generations to come.
With its tales of love, loss, mystery, and wonder — told through the voices of four wandering dervishes — Bagh-o-Bahar captures both the spirit of a magical past and the elegance of refined narration. Its graceful, flowing style and vivid imagery continue to enchant readers more than two centuries later.
This new Urdu edition has been prepared with scholarly attention to linguistic detail. It includes diacritics to facilitate accurate reading and pronunciation, as well as a comprehensive glossary to assist with comprehension of classical and less familiar terms.
